Day 214: What a Hotel!

Friends treated us to lunch, a stroll, coffee and dessert at The Broadmoor – a 98-year-old hotel that makes you feel like you’re in a fine European hotel a century ago.

If you have to ask what it costs to stay a night you can’t afford it, but the food and view were exceptional.

The halls between the tavern (where we had lunch) and the restrooms are known as “bottle alley”. Hotel owner Spencer Penrose saw prohibition coming and stored train boxcars full of alcohol ahead of time. Penrose and his guests drank these hundreds of bottles all through prohibition. Each bottle has the date consumed, and often who drank from it.
